The Current State of Waste Management in Construction

As it stands, the construction industry is responsible for 62% of all waste in the UK. Over the years, waste management in this sector has struggled with inefficiencies, largely due to outdated manual processes, inconsistent data collection, and a reactive approach to waste disposal. These issues not only hinder progress but also present a significant barrier to the UK’s goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. The increasing importance of construction to the UK economy makes it imperative that the industry adopts more efficient and sustainable waste management practices. Fortunately, technological advancements—particularly in artificial intelligence (AI)—offer a unique opportunity to transform the way the industry handles waste. A Commitment to Sustainability: The Role of SmartWaste Since its launch in 1998, SmartWaste has played a vital role in supporting the construction industry’s journey towards more sustainable waste management. With over 27,000 projects and £305 billion in total value tracked, SmartWaste has helped monitor and manage more than 90 million tonnes of waste. Introducing SmartWaste Scan: A New Era in Waste Management To address these challenges, BRE (Building Research Establishment) has introduced SmartWaste Scan—an AI-powered mobile application designed to revolutionize waste management in construction. This platform enhances operational efficiency by automating data entry, reducing human errors, and significantly improving accuracy. SmartWaste Scan uses optical character recognition (OCR) and machine learning to extract and verify data from waste tickets and material notes in real-time. This streamlined system allows contractors to oversee their projects more effectively, ensuring seamless reporting under a single platform. Early results from the six customers who have trialed SmartWaste Scan indicate a 24% reduction in processing time per document compared to traditional methods. One such company, VolkerFitzpatrick, has leveraged the platform to track the use of 30,000 tonnes of recycled aggregate and the reuse of 60,000 tonnes of soil on a major project. By reducing errors and freeing up resources, VolkerFitzpatrick is better positioned to meet both internal and external ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) commitments, ultimately contributing to its net-zero goals. The Growing Role of AI in Waste Management AI has been a part of the construction industry for decades, but recent advancements in machine learning and computing power have unlocked new potential for waste management. With AI, construction companies can now implement predictive analytics, automate designs, and optimize sustainability practices.
